Twenty Questions to Ask Your Architect

If you are considering hiring an architect, you are likely planning a major renovation project. Before you hire an architect, the American Institute of Architects suggests you interview at least three, unless you already have established a good working relationship with an architect.

The AIA suggests you ask the following questions during the interview:

• What do you see as important issues or considerations in my project?
• How will you approach this project?
• How will you gather information about my needs, goals, etc.?
• How will you establish priorities and make decisions?
• Who from the architectural firm will be dealing with me directly? Is this the same person who will be designing the project? Who will be designing the project?
• How interested are you in this project?
• How busy are you?
• What sets you apart from other architects?
• How do you establish fees?
• What would you expect the fee to be for my project?
• What are the steps in the design process?
• How do you organize the process?
• What do you expect me to provide?
• What is your design philosophy?
• What is your experience/track record with cost estimating?
• What will you show me along the way to explain the project? Will I see models, drawings or sketches?
• If the scope of the project changes, will there be additional fees? How will these be justified?
• What services do you provide during construction?
• How disruptive will construction be? How long do you expect the project will take to complete?
• Do you have a list of past clients?

The AIA has published a booklet for homeowners who are considering working with an architect. You and Your Architect is available by calling 1-800-242-3837. For more information, see www.aia.org.
