Our Homeown'er Resource Guide is designed to take some of the legwork
out of locating a reputable home remodeling contractor. We verify a contractor's
state license and/or registration, references and insurance.
We invited hundreds of local contractors to become verified
and listed in our resource guidefree of charge, as a service to
the consumer. Those who responded and successfully passed
our background check are listed in the guide with a verification
seal.
Finding certain trade professionals who are available to tackle
your remodeling projects is a challenge on Cape Cod and the
Islands. Contractors here are very busy. Because of the extremely
high demand for their services, some contractors declined
the opportunity to be included in the Resource guidebecause
they did not want to disappoint you, the consumer, by being
unable to respond to your needs. To provide you with a resource
in these categories, we have compiled a general list from
a variety of sources containing the name, location and phone
number of local businesses. These businesses have not yet
participated in the verification process. We encourage you
to conduct your own investigation of any contractor you may
consider hiring.
The state Office of Consumer Affairs and
Business Regulation recommends you investigate the following
areas:
1. Registration
The majority of home-improvement contractors need to be registered
with the state Board of Building Regulations and Standards.
For a list of exemptions visit www.mass.gov.
2. License
If a contractor will be performing certain structural work,
the contractor may also need to be licensed by the state
Board of Building Regulations and Standards.
3. Arbitration and Guaranty Fund History
Use this search to find out if the contractor has lost any
arbitration cases or has had a Guaranty Fund claim filed
against his or her registration.
4. General complaint history
Not all complaints against contractors result in a homeowner
filing an arbitration case or Guaranty Fund claim. To find
out if other complaints have been filed against a contractor,
call the Office of the Attorney General (617-727-8400)
and the Better Business Bureau (508-652-4800).
5. References
Ask the contractor for a written list of his or her three
most recent projects with names, telephone numbers and
addresses of the owners. Contact the other homeowners who
have hired the contractor and find out if they were satisfied
with the work.
6. Insurance
Confirm that the contractor has adequate personal liability,
property damage and worker's compensation insurance. Ask to
see a copy of the certificates of insurance and verify that
they are current. Otherwise, you may be liable for any injuries
and damages that occur during the project.
